When to withhold tax on cross border payments and how to apply Singapore's extensive tax treaty network.

Singapore imposes withholding tax on certain payments made to non residents. Common examples include interest, royalties, technical service fees and director remuneration.

How to handle it

  • Identify the nature of the payment and the default tax rate.
  • Check whether a tax treaty reduces or eliminates the rate.
  • Obtain a Certificate of Residence from the recipient where needed.
  • File and pay the withholding tax by the fifteenth of the second month.
